The aim of this project is to provide basic life skills to widows, impoverished mothers and disabled persons. Before Sudan's civil war, women relied on their husbands to provide for the family. The civil war has taken husbands from their wives and left many people disabled.

In order to be successful in the tailoring business, a tailor needs to be literate. Due to the long civil war, most students in this project did not have a chance to become literate. Another objective is to raise the literacy level in the region.

The project began in early 2005 with a total of eighteen trainees - six trainees per center. These trainees will later serve as the main trainers and service providers in their regions.

The man in the photo left is both the supervisor and the main technician. His duties include the following: instructing trainers, reparing sewing machines, and evaluating trainees. In addition to this supervisor, the program is run by part-time paid trainers and former trainees.
